    At Polliwog Preschool, nature ignites curiosity as children explore the living classroom of Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center in Bellevue. Polliwog Preschool is a school-year program for children ages 3-6 that builds a foundation for a lifelong love of science, nature, and learning.

    Parents love Polliwog because of our commitment to hands-on learning, emphasis on social and emotional development, and small teacher-child ratio. Kids love us for the variety of fun and exciting ways we explore the world around us. As one of King County's oldest nature preschools, we've built a reputation for excellence over the past eight years. Established in 2012. We're part of the Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center, a partnership between the City of Bellevue and Pacific Science center that began in 1993. Polliwog Preschool began in 2012.

    Explore the role material engineers play in designing spacesuits. Learn how these special outfits keep astronauts safe during missions like NASA's upcoming Artemis II journey to the Moon. Practice engineering skills by testing different materials to determine which would be the best to construct a spacesuit with. This 20-30 minute activity is best for grades 3-8. This activity is aligned to the NGSS Disciplinary Core Ideas PS1.A: Structure and Properties of Matter and ETS2.A: Interdependence of science, engineering, and technology, and the Science as well as the Science and Engineering Practices of Planning and Carrying Out Investigations and Analyzing and Interpreting Data. Required Materials: A flashlight, testing materials (such as cardboard, cardstock, tissue paper, tin foil, and fabric), a science notebook or paper, and a writing utensil.     Meet Megan Gialluca, a PhD student at the University of Washington, studying astronomy and astrobiology. Megan uses tools like spectroscopy and data from telescopes like the JWST to search for signs of life in the atmosphere of exoplanets found in the TRAPPIST-1 system.     Get ready to let your inner chemist shine as we turn household items into chemistry tools to explore the world of acidity. Learn how grape juice can reveal hidden properties of materials and test your newfound skills in an unexpected challenge! This activity, best for grades 3-8, is ~45 minutes with a 3+ hour mid-activity break for drying time. Purple pH Painting is aligned to the NGSS Disciplinary Core Idea PS1.A: Structure and Properties of Matter and the Science and Engineering Practices of Planning and Carrying Out Investigations and Analyzing and Interpreting Data. Required Materials: Each student will need 1-2 pieces of paper, scissors, a paintbrush or q-tips, a small cup of grape juice, a plate or tray to paint on, and a science notebook or sheet of paper to record data on. They will also need safe acids, bases, and neutral liquids like vinegar, baking soda, dish soap, lemon juice, and water.
    Hidden down the road from the secretive Area 51, at the even more secretive Area 47, an out-of-this-world first can be found: a real live alien. But without a way to communicate yet, what can we know about how this alien senses the world and what its home planet might be like? Examine an alien brain with educator and neuroscientist Kaitlyn Casimo to learn more about how the brain’s properties tell us about its function. Real neuroscience, fictional aliens!
    Can you and a partner discover which of two imaginary wetlands has healthy water and which one is polluted? Use a worksheet (linked below) to practice your ecology skills. Sort and graph the bugs in a water sample, then compare and contrast your graph with a peer’s to discover which wetland needs a little extra help. Finally, learn about a real polluted body of water in Washington State and how a community came together to clean up their act. This ~30 minute activity is best for grades K-2 and is aligned to the NGSS Disciplinary Core Ideas ESS3.C: Human Impacts on Earth Systems and LS4.D: Biodiversity and Humans, the Science and Engineering Practice of Engaging in Argument from Evidence, and the Crosscutting Concept of System Models. Required Materials: Each student will need a blank piece of paper, a blue and red writing utensil, scissors, and tape or glue. Each student should also receive one of the two worksheets below and be paired with a partner who receives the other worksheet.     Craters are the result of cosmic collisions between space rocks called meteors and a moon or planet. But what variables impact the formation of craters? Will a small but fast meteor create a larger crater, or a large but slow one? Use your scientific reasoning skills to carry out an investigation using a crater model, and then design an additional test of your own to extend the experiment. This ~30-minute activity is best for grades 3-8 and has connections to NGSS Disciplinary Core Ideas PS3.A: Definitions of Energy, PS3.B: Conservation of Energy and Energy Transfer, and PS3.C: Relationship Between Energy and Forces. There are also connections to the Crosscutting Concepts of Energy and Matter, Scale, Proportion and Quantity, Systems and System Models, and Cause and Effect, as well as the Science and Engineering Practices of Developing and Using Models, Planning and Carrying out Investigations, and Analyzing and Interpreting Data. Required materials: Each student, pair or small group will need a pan, pie tin, or shallow dish, flour, cocoa powder, 4 small rocks or marbles of various sizes, a meter stick, a science notebook or paper, something to write with, and newspaper or tarp to cover the ground or table if you’re doing this indoors.
